Red Sail, Blue Water; exactly as I saw it from the beach at Direction Island. The jukong is an authentic sailing vessel hand crafted by the local Cocos Malay community. These craft do not have a keel which enabled them to be used in the shallow waters of the Cocos Lagoon to collect coconuts during the copra plantation era.
These days the jukongs are used during special ceremonial days like Hari Raya for racing. It takes great skill to sail around the course and not tip over. There is nothing more spectacular than seeing the lagoon awash with colourful sails of the jukongs.
